BuyFood Tuscany Edition 2024
This year, for the B2B segment at Palazzo degli Affari in Florence, 65 certified producers (PDO, PGI, Agriqualità, Organic, Mountain Product, and PAT), selected through a regional tender, meet with 39 buyers from 19 countries to establish new commercial agreements or strengthen existing relationships.
The feedback from participating operators, both sellers and buyers, was excellent, with over 600 B2B meetings held during the two-day event and a total of 1,800 tastings of certified Tuscan products.
Conference
"Tuscany’s Food: A Journey Through Taste, Products, People, and Territories"
After the opening by the President of the Tuscany Region, Eugenio Giani, alongside the President of the Regional Council, Antonio Mazzeo, and the President of the Florence Chamber of Commerce, Massimo Manetti, ISMEA’s Head of Market Chains and Market Analysis, Fabio del Bravo, presented the report on Tuscany's GI economy: "Quality Agrifood in Tuscany: GI, Organic, and Agritourism as Drivers of Excellence?"
Following this, Giovanni Belletti, Professor of Agricultural Economics at the University of Florence, and a roundtable discussion on "Opportunities and Tools of the Tuscan Tourism Market and New Competencies Assigned to PDO and PGI Consortia" took place. Contributing to the discussion were Francesco Tapinassi, Director of Toscana Promozione Turistica, and Silvia Scaramuzzi, Professor of Agricultural, Food, and Rural Appraisal Economics at the University of Florence.
In her talk, she highlighted the significant potential of certified products as a driving force for promoting a territory through experiences like Forest Bathing (walking in forests to relieve stress while discovering the products and colors of the area) and Chestnut Tourism, which is gaining popularity in Tuscany, especially on Mount Amiata.
Masterclass
On the final day, trade press members participated in two masterclasses focused on specific products and Consortia from the region, held in select Florentine restaurants that are part of the Vetrina Toscana network. The sessions were moderated by journalists from ASET – Tuscany’s Enogastronomic and Agri-food Association, an event partner.
Consortia and Associations involved included: Central Italy PGI Lamb, Garfagnana Chestnut Flour PDO, Lucca Olive Oil PDO, Mugello Chestnut PGI, Cinta Senese PDO, Tuscan Cantuccini, Lunigiana Honey PDO, and Tuscan Olive Oil PGI.

The first stop of the tour began on Thursday, October 24, with a visit to the Savini plant in Figline Valdarno and a meeting with the Director of the Consorzio Tutela del Pane Toscano DOP, Daniele Pardini, accompanied by Angela Zinnai, a professor of Food Technologies at the University of Pisa and scientific director of Pane Toscano DOP. In the evening, a delegation from Agrietour, an event twinned with Buy Food, met with journalists in Piazza Grande in Arezzo, offering them a guided tour of the picturesque Palazzo della Fraternita dei Laici and the Vasari exhibition currently on display. Among those present were the President of CCIAA Arezzo-Siena, Massimo Guasconi, the Project Manager of AgrieTour, Simone Genovesi, and the Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of the Tuscany Region, Gennaro Giliberti.
The tour continued on Friday, October 25, with a visit to Finocchiona IGP at the Salumeria of Monte San Savino, where the famous Porchetta is also produced. The visit took place in the company of the President and Director of the Consorzio di Tutela, Alessandro Iacomoni and Francesco Seghi, who guided the journalists through the various stages of processing, aging, and labeling. After a stop in Trequanda to meet with Andrea Petrini, Director of the Consorzio di Tutela del Vitellone Bianco Appennino Centrale IGP, and to visit a local farm, the group moved to Cortona for a presentation of Aglione della Valdichiana, a product awaiting European certification — known to Americans as Giant or Elephant Garlic — accompanied by Edo Giorgio Perugini from the “Orto Fortunato” farm.
The visit concluded on Saturday, October 26, in Caprese Michelangelo, birthplace of Michelangelo, where journalists had the opportunity to visit local chestnut groves and stroll among the stands at the Chestnut and Marrone Festival, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Marrone di Caprese Michelangelo DOP designation. They were accompanied by Silvano Piombini, President of the Cooperativa Agricola Forestale Valle Singerna, and welcomed by the Mayor, Marida Brogialdi, who received the 20-year DOP designation certificate from Angela Crescenzi of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of the Tuscany Region.
